Well, the wait is finally over. To my great excitement (strangely not shared by my husband) I found that the Draft Curriculum for Wales 2022 guidance had been published at 23:30 last night.
So what does the new curriculum look like?
Content led
Purpose led
Well firstly, it has moved from being a prescriptive, content-led approach to one that gives teachers the autonomy to plan an innovative and creative curriculum relevant to the context and specific needs of their learners. The new curriculum seeks to allow for a broadening of learning, supporting schools to be more flexible in their approaches.
Because the new curriculum offers greater local flexibility and autonomy, it will require active engagement by all teachers in Wales. All teachers will need to understand the new curriculum – extensive professional dialogue will be essential.
Key Stages
Continuum of learning from ages 3 to 18
Secondly, there will no longer be any key stages in schools – learners will progress along the same continuum of learning
Finally, the Curriculum for Wales 2022 guidance sets out what settings and schools should take into account in designing their curriculum.
Schools need to take into account:
1. The 4 purposes and their key characteristics
2. The AoLE content:

Descriptions of learning
3. Wider skills
4. Cross-curricular responsibilities
The aim of this blog is to enable teachers to explore what the curriculum guidance means and how it might look in the classroom so that they can feedback their thoughts and ideas to WG before 19th July 2019. What do you think of your first look at the new curriculum? Are there any resources you would find useful? Let me know in the comments below.
